Made it to the hotel. Where is everyone?

'Operation Purge Apple' Has Commenced

I make no secret of the fact that a few years ago, I made the leap and started drinking the Apple Kool-Aid. Right now in my house we have 2 iPods, 1 iPod Touch, 2 iPhones, 1 MacBook Pro and 1 Magic Mouse. I know...that is nothing compared to some fanboys, but that has all been acquired in about the last 3 years or so.

Due to some of the news I have been reading about Apple and where they seem to be going when it comes to 3rd party software and delivering content to devices, as well as the litany of stories about the 'App Store' approval process, I decided that, for now, Apple will be getting no more of my money. Now, I have not been so militant that I decided to throw out all my Apple devices...that would be silly...I already paid for them, I will continue to use them as long as they are useful. So, I will continue to use my MacBook Pro until it comes time to replace it.  The same goes for the Magic Mouse and all 3 iPods, we will continue to use them as long as they continue to work, and when they need replacing...well...we will see.....

This brings me to the iPhones. We currently have the 3G model, and to be honest, I like the device, it has served me well - though recently it has been a bit sluggish and has required me to reboot more frequently - but its time to get new phones. Our contract with AT&T was up this past weekend and I have been looking at other phones and carriers. Given that I do not want to give Apple any more money (for now) I am pretty much left with Android based phones as an option (I am so turned off by the new Windows mobile interface that I could not even consider one of those).

After a couple of months of research, I have decided that we are switching to Sprint and getting HTC Evos. I have spoken to quite a few people who live near me and have Sprint and they have told me the coverage is very good. I have my reasons for choosing the Evo, but that may be for another post. I ordered the phones this afternoon, so, in the next few days, the iPhones will be retired. This is step 1.1* in purging our house from Apple.

*Step 1.0 was to stop buying music from iTunes - we have not purchased music from iTunes in quite sometime.

Though Im not looking to purge Apple, (I wouldnt give up my mac for anything in the world) I did want to try an Android phone after using the iPhone since it first came out. So this past weekend I gave up my iPhone 4 and picked up the new HTC Inspire 4G from At&t. After playing with it for a couple days, I can see the appeal of Android, however I can also see that its playing catch-up to the iPhone. There are some features that my Android phone has that Apple should have had in the iPhone years ago but will never have Im sure. But the seamless user experience on the iphone is missing from Android in my opinion. Battery life isnt even close either.

Im still going to give this phone a good run since I have 30 days to decide if I like it or not. If I just cant swing it, I will return it and pay the extra $100 bucks and get another iPhone4.

Good luck with your switch!

@Russ - I like my MacBook Pro, I really do. But, I just don't like where it looks like Apple is headed - and I cannot, in good conscience give my hard earned money to a company I don't trust.

Also, for work, I have to use the Windows laptop that was supplied by my employer. Other than the fact that it is woefully under powered in the RAM department (which, I am told, is being addressed), I find it is no more, no less difficult or time consuming to develop on the Windows machine than it is on my MBP (and this machine is running XP). Everyone else in my house is running Windows 7 on their laptops and, in the times I have used their laptops because I was too lazy to go upstairs and use mine, I actually don't hate it.

Who knows, maybe in a short time I will change my mind, but as I said, for now, Apple will get no more money form me.

Have a mixture in my house too. For work I have to have a Mac Book Pro as well as iPhone and iPad, but unless work demands I always pick up my HTC Desire, XP laptop or Dell netbook. Why anyone would spend so much money on an iPad when for a fraction you can have a netbook running windows or linux is beyond me.

BTW forget all the horror stories about App Store approval process, it's much worse than you've heard.

I applaud you. I too have been on a mission to purge most of my Apple products. It hasn't been easy. I have an original iPhone, MacBook, iPod, and an iPad. Like you I stopped using iTunes and ITMS a long time ago in favor of Amazon and eMusic. My iPod was retired after I got my iPhone. The iPhone has since been retired in favor of the Nexus One. I do not think I will ever give up my MacBook and I inherited the iPad from my dad. I really want to put the iPad up on eBay to finance a Xoom or Playbook purchase. My only stipulation is that the tablet must be wifi only. I'll use my Nexus One as a hotspot when 3G is needed. As long as Apple got no money from me in acquiring the iPad, I can live with that.

I've got an EVO and I love it. If you're not afraid of rooting it, there's a ROM called "Burnt Droid" by Netarchy of XDA that is really good. It's got kernel tweaks to make the EVO less of a battery slut, but keeps most everything else the same.

My only complaint about the EVO is that 4G absolutely murders your battery, whether you are using the stock ROM or custom. I leave 4G turned off unless I am tethering.

One thing about the EVO: you're stuck with Froyo for the time being. Neither Gingerbread nor Honeycomb has been ported over in any stable sense. That's not awful, but you'd be getting a phone that's already a little behind.
